Press of the Republican Exile (1936-1977)

The Civil War diaspora led to the birth of hundreds of republican newspapers in the host countries of Spanish exiles. These publications helped them create a space where their cause transcended physical territories and shaped an imaginary that crossed borders, in which they located their ideal and particular concept of the Spanish state. Thanks to the construction of this mental and communicative territory, their belonging to a people did not float in absolute emptiness but was anchored in that relational sphere which they also built with and in the press. Through their media, they shared their refugee status despite the distances separating them, while continuing to fight against Francoism. This book explores and highlights the newsletters, newspapers, and magazines of republican exiles that served as a platform for their political, cultural, and scientific activity from 1936 to 1977. It emphasizes the difficulties they had to overcome, identifying their writers and editors, attempting to understand the origin of their funding, indicating the obstacles to their distribution, and showing how their press reflected the discrepancies among different ideologies as well as the desires of these political emigrants to return to a democratic Spain.
